History:
Flying to Marana Army Air Field from Albuquerque, BT-13B
(42-89683) crashed in the White Mountains while attempting
to avoid a thunderstorm. Lt. Kenneth Ray was killed in the
wreck, but S/Sgt. Edgar M. Rutter survived. S/Sgt. Rutter
was able to hike off the mountain and reach McNary. One
newspaperThis BT-13B, S/N 42-90406, was manufactured at the
Vultee Aircraft plant in Downey, California, and delivered
to the USAAF Air Transport Command (ATC) on 10 April 1944 at
Long Beach Army Air Field, California. In March of 1945 it
was transferred to the 556th AAF Base Unit (ATC) at Long
Beach. It was disposed of as surplus in April 1945. article
reports Rutter arrived in McNary "bruised and dazed."
